On February 5th, my son, a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army was involved in a life-threatening and senseless accident in Tacoma, WA. He was hit outside of his vehicle by a drunk driver and crushed from the waist down. He has lost his right leg and we are working on reconstructing the left. He was on life support for 4 days and since flown to San Antonio to undergo further reconstruction surgeries at Brooke Army Medical Center, rehab at the VA Poly Trauma Unit and end at the Center for the Intrepid. This is an unexpected life-changing event certainly for him and my family.
I want to thank everyone for the many messages, outreach and support I have received from the Chamber membership and the Beavercreek community. I am so humbled by it all.
It is said that when you experience a tragedy in your life there are lessons to learn, and a new purpose can unfold in front of you. Currently, this is something that is hard for me to realize. However, my son is one of the strongest, most stubborn and one of the most amazing young men you will ever meet. He is a leader to his core. So, I am hoping that my purpose in this journey will be to actually learn from him. To see him overcome these new physical and mental challenges; to gain his strength and determination; and to become a better person and a better leader.
Most of the time in our lives and businesses we have a sense of what is to come. There is a steady narrative, a feeling of "lights, camera, action" when big events are imminent. But trauma isn't like that. It just happens, and then life has to go on. No one prepares you for it. So, although it may be a bit cliché, “remember to stop and smell the roses and don’t take life for granted.” Your new or renewed purpose will unfold and will offer you the inspiration or the peace that you seek. Always remember to keep Moving FORward.
